Must clay pottery be fired in a kiln for it to be "fit" for use in human consumption? I've noticed that all the clay I look at in the craft shops, etc, is labeled as being unsuitable for use in human consumption, even though many are also labeled "non toxic" (???). Is there a special type of clay that is "fit" for use with food, or is it the kiln-firing process that makes it safe, or what? I mean, I don't think that indiginous peoples had access to kilns or glazes when they were using their pots (?)... so, I'm a little confused here...

Pottery is really important to visual art. The ancient Greeks valued pottery. Pottery was made for different reasons. Undecorated pottery was used for kitchen and storage purposes. Ceramics were also used for cooking, water supplies, table purposes and feeding bottles. Two handled pots was used for food and liquid. More early corinthian (pottery) was used for household purposes. More fancy pottery was used to decorate sitting rooms as well as other places. There where many artists and potters who made and decorated Amphamora. There was Aplles, who was the official sculptor of Alexander the great, who was a king. Some other names of ancient Greek artists were Polygnotus,Lesth,Mikon and Zeuxis. These potters used different kind of styles. The severe style which was from 530 B.C.E to 380 B.C.E .The Free Style was used from 480 B.C.E to 380 B.C.E. Ceramics featured many different colors and ways of decorating . They painted slip on everything but the figure. Slip is potter's clay that is thinned and used for coating or decorating ceramics. The figure is the main design of the amphamora. The red figure and black figure was very popular on pottery. It involved painting the back round black and the figures red(as seen in image one ). Same as black figure except the figures were black and the background was red. The red and black figure technique was both used for small and ordinary scenes from everyday life. They decorated by painting and writing on the pottery. Pottery was painted with a naturalistic theme which means that they used a lot of nature scenes on it the ceramics. They had geometric vases meaning the designs were circles, ovals, lines ect. repeating in a mathematical way. They used colors like yellow, red, purple, black and white. The designs were very detailed and specific. They used a palmette honeysuckle pattern which is palm and honey suckle leaves arranged in a rotating cluster. They had decorated borders, frezzies with overlapping circles crossed by straight lines. Some patterns were bead, drop and scroll. The scroll pattern was a ribbon like theme in shape or a scroll. They had harmonious proportions which means that they blend really well together. They painted animals in continuous bands. Animals like panthers, lions ,goats, deer and large birds. The figures on the pottery helped portray the scenes that were painted on the pottery. Kings and warriors were carved into the pottery. Gods,Goddesses and human beings where also on the pottery. Orpheus, a superhero was very popular on Greek pottery , as well as other super heroes. Greek pottery was made at different times. At Around 11,00 B.C.E people around the world were making pottery. The ancient Greeks caught on to this and started it during the new stone age . During the Hellenistic period pottery wasn't as popular. Pottery: firing, reapplying fresh clay, refiring ok? I know the title sounds a little weird, but is it possible if say I were to make a clay pot that didn't look very smooth when i took it out of the kiln, could I apply clay slip to it and polish it and refire it so it would look smooth? or would it crack
in pottery, how do you center your clay on a pottery wheel? i'm taking sculpture for freshmen year, and i had mr. lannon center the clay for me and i was able to make pots pretty easily, but i can't center it myself, it's the only problem and the biggest problem i'm having. how exactly do you center them while the wheel is turning?

How hot can you get homemade pottery? I made a tea pot in my pottery class and I was wondering if you can actually boil water in it. I don't know what kind of glaze is on it but I know it is safe to drink out of. It has been fired two times on for the clay and one for the glaze.
How do I prevent clay from cracking as it dries? Our pottery, especially coil pots, tend to crack as it is drying. Is the clay to wet to start with? Is it drying to quickly? Do I have the wrong kind of clay?(cone 06 earthenware-red and white)
Pottery and Clay Modelling? I am looking at fulfilling a lifetime ambition of making quirky one off pots, plates, ornaments, jugs vases, ashtrays and all sorts of weird and wonderful nik naks - all in clay. I don't have much money to throw at this as it will start as a hobby, and hopefully if it gains enough momentum I can sell things locally or on ebay and maybe have enough money for a kiln. My question is therefore how can I get started and what''s the best type of clay to use and without a kiln but using an oven or outside gas barbecue barbecue (which can heat up to 800degrees - not sure if this is celcius or farenheit)?
Has anyone made masks using non-polymer clay? I am about to undertake a class that instructs students about using pottery materials to make masks. I do not want to use polymer clay as glazing techniques used on fired hand-thrown pots will produce the type of appearance I want to achieve. As I understand it, this will not happen using polymer clay because its basic ingredient is plastic and the colors applied are the colors you get, even when fired. Has anyone done this kind of modeling and if so, any advice to offer?

Can you mend a dry clay piece by using wet clay? I was in my pottery class and I knocked over a really nice piece! I didn't tell anyone (yea I know I should have admitted it but I'm scared too). I was just wondering if the kid can fix the pot or if he/she has to scrap it and start all over?!? We use red brown clay and it hasn't been fired yet but its really dry. Can he just paste it on with wet clay??

learn everything - guidance help? My ultimate goal is to possess the knowledge to and actually one day go into the wilderness naked and build up my own civilization. From absolutely nothing to building everything on my own from natural materials found in the wild including a modern computer, modern house, modern car, small airplane, farming equipment, etc. So, I am sure that there is an enormous amount of knowledge before me that I must not only learn but master it like breathing air. Going over this entire thing has proved very difficult for me to put down in words or time consuming. Therefore, I chose the ‘concept approach’. I wrote down everything that I could think of starting from the very basics concepts/foundational knowledge points need to survive all the way to the modern techonological products that we all depend on today. What I would like to inquire of you all here is to guide me. I hope that my list is correct but it may be missing things or totally wrong or exactly right. I’m not sure but I hope that those who know these things can guide me in the right direction. What I am doing now is researching every area that I have listed here. I am solely using the internet now but will utilize other means i.e. library, universities, etc. when I am stuck or hit the wall. Getting started on this as soon as possible is very important for me because I need to know what I can learn on my own and what I need to learn from others via apprenticeships, special programs, etc. This is important because I am thinking about using my GI Bill to start college in January but I am not sure what I should major in. Initially I thought that I should major in agriculture but after I made the list below I figured most of the things deal with agriculture can be learned alone rather than exclusively in a brick and mortar college institution. Just to give an example, the knowledge that I want to possess that pertains to electricians and doing everything that they do from scratch is something that seems like it must be learned via some kind of special program. The same thing goes for computers. Being able to build a modern computer from scratch and I do mean EVERYTHING is also something that seems like I must learn via some kind of special program. I haven’t even been able to find a single person who knows how to do it. But I know for a fact there are people who possess that very knowledge. I use to work with them when I was in the Navy as an intel analyst. What do I expect then? Well, I am hoping that people who know and understand what I am doing will guide me to books, sites, links, contact points, etc. AND/OR those experts in certain areas that I have listed will guide me in the right direction regarding the foundational knowledge for their expertise. I do hope I am explaining this in a way that makes sense. Well, anyway I don’t want to be too verbose so here it is. ------------------- BASICS Water - locate it ( 1. body of water i.e. river, lake, ocean 2. watery fruit/plants i.e. cactus 3. animals’ blood 4. well 5. ‘cloud harvesting’/‘fog catching’ 6. ‘air well’ ), purify it , ensure continuous supply Food: A. eating 1. meat - catching (trapping, tracking, snares/deadfalls, ) , killing , cleaning , eating ( raw, cooked, edible/unedible parts, drink blood, preparing meat ) , storing , preserving (curing, drying, salting, smoking, pickling ) * bugs - locating/identifying , catching , killing , cleaning , eating ( raw, cooked, edible/unedible parts ) , storing , preserving (drying , salting , pickling ) 2. fruits - locating/identifying , storing , preserving (drying) 3. vegetables/weeds/flowers/algae/legumes/nuts/grains - locating/identifying , obtaining , eating (raw, cooked, edible/unedible parts) , cleaning , preparing (cooking, etc. ?) , storing , preserving (drying, pickling ) 4. herbs/teas - locating/identifying , obtaining, preparing , preserving (drying, ? ) , consuming B. ensure continuous supply 1. animals - catching , containing , feeding/watering , mating , their health , training 2. fruits - growing , pest control , invasive species , health 3. vegetables - growing ( planting, watering, harvesting) , pest control , invasive species , health 4. herbs/teas - growing ( planting, watering, harvesting) , pest control , health bees - obtaining/catching , utilizing (getting honey, storing it, ) , containing/controlling , health Pottery/containers/tools (stone, mud, animal parts, ) - clay - obtaining , utilizing ( ‘handwork’, heating to turn into pots/bowls/cups etc. http://www.zetatalk.com/shelter/tshlt23h.htm seashells - obtaining , utilizing ( forming into pots/bowls/cups etc. ) Fire - making (normal/wet/cold/windy conditions), candles, Shelter - building ( can withstand any weather condition) , [debris hut, wicki-up, mud hut, cave dwelling, thatched shelter, pit dwelling , ] house , barn , gates for livestock Clothes - sources - c

What do I need to become a potter? Years ago my uncle used to take me the Richmond Pottery and I fell in love with it. I learned the basics of throwing, glazing, and got pretty good at making bowls, pots, cups, plates, etc.... Anyway, I want to start doing it at home, but I have no idea what I need. Of course I know I need a wheel and all the basic little tools which I remember using-- my question lies more along with what KIND of wheel is best, and most of all, the kiln? Do you HAVE to get a kiln or are there some types of clay that you can bake? I would probably do a lot of hand painting on my pottery. I've tried researching, but not to much avail. I'd love to find someone I could correspond with to help me get started. When I went to the pottery when I was younger, I was never schooled on things like types of clays and firing temperatures and stuff. I was only taught the basics of actually throwing the pottery. Thanks guys!!
Small Wood Fired Hobbie Kiln For Home? Hi everyone I knew to the whole clay thing, and no one in my area has a kiln. The kids are looking to do some pottery and whatnot and I much prefer the idea of actual clay and firing as opposed to using something like sculpey for fimo in the oven. I had a friend who used to do firings in his backyard in an old fire pit, his kids made small pots and bowls and he used wood and saw dust to fuel it. Ive seen the results and they came out very nice! Im looking to do something the same and I want to keep it small as the largest thing ill be firing is about the size of a kettle. Any plans ive seen are the size of a barn! Can anyone help me out here? And I want it to fire at the normal temp so it doesnt leave everything super fragile. Any help would be great :)
