Need help on identifying face art pottery, possibly Irish/Gaelic? I have 2 pieces of lovely but unusual face art pottery with both marks and artist signatures. The signature is perfectly clear, written into the clay on bottom, but I cannot decipher it. Can only make out the first 7 letters which are..."Deichiu". The remaining letters could be "aua" but I am not sure. All to do with reading handwriting. When I googled the first 7 letters you see above, I got sites that were irish or gaelic, some spoke about the respective languages. Hopefully I am at least on track. The logo, well same thing. I interpret it a capital letter "D" and horizontally centered in it is the letter "Y". Under that is marked very clearly either "NB 44" or "N3 44". They are very heavy pottery pieces, 6.5 " long, 3.5 " wide and 3.5 " tall. The glazing on this brown pottery is a light green, I would say. If anyone with experience in collecting art pottery, Irish, Gaelic or whatever can help me identify what I have, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks,

What to charge for fine art pieces at a craft fair? I'm thinking of getting a booth at an Arts and Crafts Fair in my local town. I will have paintings, drawings and possibly some other pieces (pottery, clay works), perhaps some graphic design works. Considering sizes, detail, etc, what would be some fair prices for paintings, drawings etc? Also, I plan on just framing them with foamboard or regular matboard, this way the customer has the choice of an actual frame (metal, wood or whatever), to go with their home decor. Would that work well? Any other tips would be really helpful, as this would be my first time doing this, other than face painting at another fair! lol Thanks for all your thoughts everyone :)
I wanna become a high school art teacher, but I suck at using the pottery wheel. Help!? I don't think I can be a art teacher now. I loooove ceramics. I love making masks and pigs and cows and everything else. My favorite part is painting everything so detailed. But I suck at the pottery wheel. I can't make a freakin bowl for my life. I need to make 2 bowls by the end of this semester to pass the class and I can't do it. I'm so discouraged right now. I use to love ceramics and clay but the pottery wheel is ruining my life. What are some good tips? And I HATE glaze!!!! It makes the pieces so boring because you can't even mix the colors or anything without the piece looking like poop!!!!! I sooooo prefer painting ceramic stuff with acrylic paint.

I really want to join pottery classes but what can I do? Okay, pottery is something I did my sixth grade year for an after school activity because the art teacher asked me to join art club (because I really love art!) Now I am going into 8th grade. So I said “Okay” thinking it was just going to be a fun little club where we draw and talk to friends at the art room after school and I was curious why we had to pay $40.00. But I told my mom that the art teacher asked me and she gave me $40.00 which I gave to my art teacher. Then, she led me to a poster and it said “clay sculpting, scarf making/painting, landscaping, pottery, and drawing” I was like “Cool! So it’s not just drawing. I didn’t even know there were pottery wheels and stuff in the art room. Probably in her art closet” so I just wrote my name under “pottery”. Then, she told me we would be going on a bus to a town for the club and I am like “Oh, so cool!” So all through that year I was in pottery and I thought it was the coolest thing I have ever done. I really wish I could do it forever because it is absolutely my favorite hobby ever. I would not quit or anything but last year and this year I am in middle school and they don’t have pottery. The art club really IS just a place where you draw and hang out with friends and I’m not saying that’s not cool and all but I really, really, really can’t stop hoping and asking that I join pottery again. But, when my mom paid that $40.00 apparently that was an amazing price for pottery lessons. I keep asking and she can’t because money is tight right now and she doesn’t have the time to drive me up to that beach-town that is 30 minutes away plus the price of gas and stuff. I understand that, but I don’t know what to do. $$ is tight at the moment and I can’t give her money right now because I am only 13 and too young for a job and I have older sisters that are experienced babysitters while I never went for a babysitters class so I can’t babysit for money and my mom doesn’t want me to get a job until I am like 15. I understand that, too. I also can’t drive (and won’t have a license ‘till I am 18) so I can’t drive myself to and from class so I don’t have money so what can I possibly do? I really, really, really, really extremely want to do pottery (sorry for the bad grammar) and I can’t stop thinking about pottery. What should I do?
I want to learn pottery.? I want to learn how to make pottery using clay. Can I teach myself? Where do I start? I'm not interested in the Plaster of Paris chalky stuff. I mean the pots, etc. We have an art studio here that offers classes sometimes, but not right now. I need any and all information pertaining to this and I just can't find anything online. Thanks in advance.
Please help...Questions about The Art Institutes(If you been to one please answer)...? I'm 16, currently a junior living in San Diego. And I'm not sure what I want to do (as a career), but I'm good at art I enjoy doing it, and I'm thinking maybe getting into advertisement maybe making movie posters or like perfume or make up ads, or maybe getting into fashion design. idk. But I was wondering what it's like to go to the art institute. Is it like high school where you have certain classes you have to take and you can have an election class(choose a class you want). I just want to know how a regular day there is like. And these are the art things I enjoy doing. So if you have time will you please tell me some careers you think would be good for me. Thank you. =] Art things I enjoy doing: -Traditional sketching and drawing -Pottery (working with clay) and a little jewelry making -Photography -Digital art: working with photoshop and Coral Painter X, although I don't have much experience in that -Fashion, I enjoy making a few fashion sketches every now and then but that's as far as I go with that. My Plan: And after high school I plan on going to Mira costa collage, than the peace corps because I'd like to get involved in helping ect. and I think it'll give me time to think of what I really want to do, and then afterwords I plan on going to the Art Institute. Do you think that's a good plan? And I do really want to join the peace corps so no comment on that please. And I just want to figure this all out because at my school we're going to do this thing called a Juniorexhibitionn and that'sbasicallyy finding a career you're interested in doing and you have to do a ton of research and other stuff for it Thank you very much for your help! =]
Where can I fire my pottery? i need to fire my tiny pumpkin made out of clay over the weekend for my ceramics class since it's due on tuesday and i'm behind..i thought a place like art topia would work but i can not find them anymore..is there any other place i can go to? (in the bay area)
Hand crafting an amazing art set and a present? I wanted to do something that involves time for my girlfriends birthday. The plan was for it to be something creative, special, and something she can use and take with her as we both leave for college soon. She is going to college for Interior design and loves her arts as well. My plan was to create a wooden case (hand crafted, fine wood as well) and place art brushes, different paints, and other art like items into it. I'm unsure of what art items to give an interior designer or just someone who is really into art. She likes to do clay models and is really good with pottery, but I don't have one of the spinning tables for her.. haha. (Terrible with technological term on art). Anyways, can anyone suggest maybe how I can go about building this case and what to place in it? I am thinking bamboo small and fine pointed brushes that I will order, and then make the rest of the case by hand. So all in all: What / where should I find brushes? How should the case be designed? What tools and fun things should I place in the case and design the case for? If anyone can help me possibly add links or pictures of similar things that would be AMAZING. Thank you all, Ace

Would this be rude or acceptable to ask this? My neighbor is a potter and has a kilm, clay and pottery wheel in her art studio and i'm taking sculpture class so i know how to work with clay and i sorta know how to use a pottery wheel. she lives really close to me and shes a nice lady and a few years ago mentioned that i could come by and work with clay if i'd like, but that was like 3 years ago and i'm 14 and my friend who wants to come is 12 so..idk if she would think it was rude if we asked if we could come use her art studio. i don't want her to think we don't like her and we just wanna use her studio, that would seem selfish to me. so would it be rude or acceptable to ask her if we could use her art studio? (its in her house btw)

Two weeks ago our art teacher gave us each a medium sized block of red clay and told us to make two bowls, one to keep and one to donate.Basically, we made the bowls out of the red clay, painted glaze on them and then he collected them and put them in a oven.I want to do this again but at home since I enjoyed it alot.so how do i do it? what clay do i buy? where can i purchase glaze? do i just stick it in my oven when i'm done?.I'd ask my art teacher but he got laid off a couple days after we got out pottery back.
Working with Polymer clay? So I love to work with wire, glass beads & other beads. Just recently I thought I would try using polymer clay. lol I really dont know a whole lot about it so any help would be awesome. Can I work it with my hands? The patterns I have found say to use decks of cards and pasta macheines How can I figure out how long to bake it? Is there a mathmatic equation lol for every 2 inches bake for X amount of time? I've found these little metal (at least I think they're metal) itty bitty pearl/spheres I found near the polymer clay in the store, by candle wax, soap wax etc. I think it'd look cool if I could encorperate it, and any other sort of things with the clay. Should I put the additions on the clay before or after I bake the clay? Are there different painting techniques to try with the acrylic paints and clay? I'm using already colored clay so really what I mean by techniques is effects I can obtain using either colors, stains, varnishes, sponges vs paint brushes, rubs, or any way to get a metalic sheenish, or rustic metalic sort of appearance? I'm also looking for metalic polymer clay but I cannot find it. I've looked in a few art stores in the city, is there a certain store like some sort of pottery store I can find it in?? Or any chain of stores that will probably carry it? Any other help would be very appreciated, thanks!
What should I do for a Greek art project? I had to change from one art appreciation class to another because my foreign language change affected my art appreciation class. The new art teacher I have is pretty lenient, but a project is due in two days. He wants us to do something with Greek art, like make a vase they use to out of clay or something. We can also draw pictures, I guess, but I'm just hoping someone can give you advice that will spark some artistic idea in me. I don't reall know what to do...maybe just draw a giant vase on a large piece of paper and focus on the designs on it? What do you think? Thank you in advance! By the way, I'm in 9th grade. My teacher says it has to look like we spent four hours on it. And also, I don't want to do pottery. Please give me ideas of what I should draw on paper. Thanks again!

Few question about clay...? Hello! I've been interested in art for a while now, however I've never really been interested in pottery until just recently. I would love to get started. Here are a few questions: What is the best kind of clay to get? If I wanted to make little things, how would I fire them? Is there an inexpensive kiln for at home use? (Nothing crazy, just a small reasonable one) What tools are best to start with? What paints should I buy, and what paints work best? Lastly, are there any wonderful sites I should know about to help me get started? :) If there are any additional details/facts I should know, please feel free to add them in. Sorry if this sounds absurd;you can tell I'm new. lol Thank you very much. Your help is really appreciated. :D

i need more info for my essay. HELP!!!? its is about ancient roman art. and i have no clue what to write about. this is what i have so far:: Roman ancient art has been around for a long time and it is also used for different things. There are so many different types of ancient roman art. The most well known ancient art is pottery, mosaic and sculptures. Most of roman art is still around to this very day like pottery and sculptures. Romans took art seriously and used it to decorate theirs homes. Almost every home in Rome had art on the walls or on the floor, some houses even had them on their ceilings. Pottery is the most valuable art in the roman empire. Pottery is made from clay and then it is molded into different shapes and sizes to create bowls, plates, cups and many other things. When the clay is molded into the shape and design you want it to be then it is left out in the sun to dry, but now we use hot ovens to cook the pottery. Now a days pottery is expensive the amount of money ranges from $42-thousands of dollars. Pottery is important to us now because if pottery never existed then w would have no dishes and other eating appliances. Mosaics are created from tiny pieces of stone formed together to create a beautiful picture. Romans put the mosaics in the floor and on walls for their house guests to see and admire. Mosaics of the 4th century BC were found in the Macedonian palace-city of Aegae. Mosaics is a extremely popular roman art because it is very beautiful and it is also easy to create. Mosaics are put into the floor and used as floor tiles to decorate the rooms. Sculptures are also very well known because they are still around to this day. People all over the world create sculptures, but none of them compare to the Romans. The Romans made their sculptures out of bricks, stones, clay and concrete. They sculpted many things such as animals, gods and fountains. Sculptures are used now a days as decorations to resemble something or just to decorate a room. Roman art was important because with out it we would probably have no pottery, mosaics and sculptures. Roman art was well known for decorating their houses. Roman art was found in mostly every single house in Rome because it was colorful, creative and it brightens up their homes. We still use roman art to this day for decorations. I need info fast four pages due tomorrow. AHHH idc if its good. i just need 4 pages. haha
can some one re-word this please? Mexico is known worldwide for its folk art traditions, mostly derived from the indigenous and Spanish crafts. Pre-Columbian art thrived over a wide timescale, from 1800 BC to AD 1500. Certain artistic characteristics were repeated throughout the region, namely a preference for angular, linear patterns, and three-dimensional ceramics. Notable handicrafts include clay pottery from the valley of Oaxaca and the animal figures from the village of Tonala. Colorfully embroidered cotton garments, cotton or wool shawls and outer garments, and colorful baskets and rugs are seen everywhere. Mexico is also known for its pre-Columbian architecture, especially for public, ceremonial and urban monumental buildings and structures.

Alternative materals for sand block sculpting? I'm looking for an alternative ingredient to solidify a sand mixture for producing sand blocks. These blocks would be used in subtractive sculpting / carving. The stabilizing ingredient I am familiar with is a two part resin that hardens to solidify the sand mixture. This mixture uses only 2 ingredients, sand and the resin. You may have seen this mixture used to make sand molds for casting metals in industrial applications as well as fine art applications. I like to use these sand blocks (2ft. cubes and smaller) for carving as they are easy to produce and shape. I'm looking to find an environmentally friendly ingredient to replace the resin in the mix. Possibly something that could be rehydrated after use and formed back into another block, ie: how pottery clay(not fired) can be recycled by rehydrating it. I'd like to achieve large blocks (2x2x2 ft.) without fracturing in the curing process. I only need to carve the blocks, not use them for casting metal. Thanks for any advice
Question about 3D painting/sculptures? Sorry if the question is confusing, but I don't know what to call the art form I am asking about; In fact my question is, "what IS it called"? Basically, I have seen these in gift shops, on peoples walls, etc. It is a painting of a scene, but rather than painted on a canvas, it is painted on a slab or clay or pottery that is shaped like the opbjects being depicted. For example, my friend has a village scene on his wall. It feels like kilned clay or something, it's about a quarter inch thick at the edges, and about 5 by 5 inches. The actual scene is of a few houses, the cobblestone sidewalk between them , and various elements. The cobblestones are all individually cutinto the raised surface of the slab. The houses stand out even further, and every detail is textured, i/e/ window frames are slightly inpressed, the roof is further raised, every door handle, pipe and such also are tactile and either engraved or placed above the surface. What is this called? It's not a sculpture, it's not a painting...It's a painted textured 3D slab. What the heck is the actual name for this type of artwork?

Pottery is really important to visual art. The ancient Greeks valued pottery. Pottery was made for different reasons. Undecorated pottery was used for kitchen and storage purposes. Ceramics were also used for cooking, water supplies, table purposes and feeding bottles. Two handled pots was used for food and liquid. More early corinthian (pottery) was used for household purposes. More fancy pottery was used to decorate sitting rooms as well as other places. There where many artists and potters who made and decorated Amphamora. There was Aplles, who was the official sculptor of Alexander the great, who was a king. Some other names of ancient Greek artists were Polygnotus,Lesth,Mikon and Zeuxis. These potters used different kind of styles. The severe style which was from 530 B.C.E to 380 B.C.E .The Free Style was used from 480 B.C.E to 380 B.C.E. Ceramics featured many different colors and ways of decorating . They painted slip on everything but the figure. Slip is potter's clay that is thinned and used for coating or decorating ceramics. The figure is the main design of the amphamora. The red figure and black figure was very popular on pottery. It involved painting the back round black and the figures red(as seen in image one ). Same as black figure except the figures were black and the background was red. The red and black figure technique was both used for small and ordinary scenes from everyday life. They decorated by painting and writing on the pottery. Pottery was painted with a naturalistic theme which means that they used a lot of nature scenes on it the ceramics. They had geometric vases meaning the designs were circles, ovals, lines ect. repeating in a mathematical way. They used colors like yellow, red, purple, black and white. The designs were very detailed and specific. They used a palmette honeysuckle pattern which is palm and honey suckle leaves arranged in a rotating cluster. They had decorated borders, frezzies with overlapping circles crossed by straight lines. Some patterns were bead, drop and scroll. The scroll pattern was a ribbon like theme in shape or a scroll. They had harmonious proportions which means that they blend really well together. They painted animals in continuous bands. Animals like panthers, lions ,goats, deer and large birds. The figures on the pottery helped portray the scenes that were painted on the pottery. Kings and warriors were carved into the pottery. Gods,Goddesses and human beings where also on the pottery. Orpheus, a superhero was very popular on Greek pottery , as well as other super heroes. Greek pottery was made at different times. At Around 11,00 B.C.E people around the world were making pottery. The ancient Greeks caught on to this and started it during the new stone age . During the Hellenistic period pottery wasn't as popular. The times potter was popular was 530 B.C.E to 480 B.C.E and from 480 B.C.E to 330 B.C.E. Ancient Greek pottery was important to Greek art. Ancient Greek corinthian was used for storage, decorating and had many details. Pottery today is in art museums, auctions and shops. Now they use a potters wheel. What Ancient Greek pottery and pottery today have in common is that they were u

I'm allergic but I've never known anyone else to be ? I didn't know it was really possible but, I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to clay. This is because, in Art class we often use clay and most lessons my arms would become itchy and red and will occasionally have lumps, only in the worse cases. I have felt feverish twice during these reactions. Is this an allergic reaction to clay? It's so sensitive, when I sit in the classroom, not even touching the wet clay, it will still react. It doesn't react when the clay is dry - only wet and the kind we use for pottery Ha ha, is this allergy to clay, and should I get cream or anything for it?

Help with explaining poverty to autistic kids? In my Art class, we're doing a project called "Pockets 4 Pottery", in which we create clay pockets and sell them in a silent auction. Only, instead of bidding money, the buyers bid canned foods etc to a food bank. At the end, the autistic kids from our school will help us to sort out the foor products. My teacher put me in charge of making a PowerPoint Presentation explaining the idea to the autistic kids. It must explain what poverty is, why it's important to share what you have, what a food bank is, etc. to the children. I'm having a hard time explaining at an easy-to-understand level. PLEASE HELP!

Does my room reflect my personality? I want to change my room, because I don't think that it reflects who I am, but some people say that I'm over exaggerating My room: Light green walls, with absolutely nothing on them A 5 shelf book shelf, the bottom shelf is almost completely filled with books, and there are a few on the top shelf to. The second shelf from the bottom has some stuff I made from clay, there is also a few clay pieces on the shelf above that one, one of them is a huge mug that is filled with little plastic animals, but mostly that shelf is filled with birthday cards from friends and family, and thins like that. The second to last shelf has my DVD, so in other words, it's almost empty. Pictures I've drawn, mostly leaning against the shelf. A parakeet playground and a cardboard box filled with other bird care supplies. Wrapping paper. Some cardboard boxes where I keep some of my other stuff, like artwork I don't really like. Desk, a bunch of papers, that are important to me in one way or another, a box of pencils, a leopard print vase (not my choice) with yellow roses, cute animal calender, colored pencils, a spray for cleaning glasses, glue, stapler, tape. There is a binder and a yearbook on the floor by the desk. Gray chair, my backpack (purple, with pink and white flowers (getting new one soon (I hope))), a bunch of plastic bags are on top of it. There is a black tote bag, with a pattern of different colored hearts, it has my swim stuff inside. Bed, pillows, if you look carefully, they have pictures of roses on them, bed sheet, white with small pinkish purple flowers, I like, but no one ever sees it, beige blanket, there are usually some clothe I wore the day before and a toy dog on the far end. There is a rag doll I made around here somewhere. There is a large gap between the bed and wall, where things tend to fall, but I can't move my bed any closer. Door, there is a bird shaped hanger, that sometimes falls of, it has two bathrobes on it, one that I use right no, purple and fuzzy, and an older neon yellow one that says princess on it, it also has a huge crown on the back. Dresser, there are some gym clothe sticking out from the lowest drawer, and a parakeet cage on top, obviously there is a parakeet inside the cage. There is a towel that I use to cover up the cage at night. There is a large sliding door closet mirror, two of my jacket sleeves are sticking out (different jackets). Finally, there is a pink "organza hatbox", on top of a jack-o-lantern shaped candy bag, which I borrowed for Halloween from my friends, and still haven't returned. My room is slightly messy, but it still takes only a few seconds to clean. Me: I am 14 years old, and am going to 8th grade this year. I love to read, in fact, most members in my family think I read to much. I like almost any type of art, but my favorite are pottery and acting. I like science too tough, but I don't really have a favorite type their. I pretty much hate sports, specially ones that include balls, the sports I do like are rock climbing, skating, riding my bike, and kind of swimming. I love anything to do with animals and nature, as long as it isn't a spider, and I tend to get emotionally attached to any type of animal that I have seen close up, or held, which is why I don't eat lobster, and will never dissect a frog, unless I am forced to in High School or veterinary school (where I'm hoping to end up). My friends think that I'm weird that way, and it's not like less frogs will be killed for dissection, but I still think I'm at least making a small difference. Anyway, me and my friend have decided that everybody is weird, which makes being weird normal, and my weirdness is that I get emotionally attached to anything, starting with ants and ending with giraffes, oh, and memorizing random things. I am at leas a year older than all of my friends, so I am often the one who is left in charge whenever we go somewhere without our parents, so I at least try to be the responsible one, but I can't say i always succeed, because I'm not exactly the most organized person on earth. It's a little funny, I like to organize things, but I never stick to it. Oh, and my favorite colors are blue and purple. So basically, I want my room to show that I love reading, animals, spending time with friends, pottery/drawing/acting, and rock climbing. It would be nice if it had storage space that made it easy to organize things, and maybe had something blue or purple in it (not the wall colors). And I don't want it be too girlie (a little is nice, just not too much), or look like it belongs to someone much younger, or much older than me. Would you say my room has at least some or those qualities? Which ones? What should I do to add the other ones?
Ancient Greek Artifacts? I have a project that I'm working on for school. (: And I need some ideas for Greek artifacts. It has to relate to ancient Greek art and/or literature. Right now, I have pottery and frescoes. How-to's are appreciated as well. By the way, does anyone what kind of paint you use to paint air-dry modeling clay? I need to make it a terracotta color, and then use black paint some designs. Thanks.

He is having a lot of problems on the pottery wheel, and he has to make 12 pots, at least 6 inches, before Monday. His pots are ending up "waisted", essentially, big and floppy on top, small in the middle, and break off. HELP!
