handmade ceramics, clay, pottery, sculpture using no kiln, oven bake or no bake supplies? I have a project with clay/ ceramics/ sculpture I want to get underway. I am planning on making a set of "functional items": plates, bowls, cups etc. I would really like to use a kiln, (you know, the whole glazing and firing deal) but I don't have the resources where I live. 1) Is there any sort of non bake or low bake clays that will allow me to make these projects at home? 2) I also want to paint them, and hopefully glaze them. By doing this, will I also be able to use them "functionally"? And what is the best glaze for this? 3) Can I heat them and wash them without ruining the pottery or without causing safety hazards? 4) How is the comparison in quality as opposed to finishing them with a kiln? Thanks in advance! Best Wishes!
How Do You Make A Cup With Clay At Home? Shape It, Fire It, Paint It, All That Good Stuff? Hi, I was wanting to learn how to do a little pottery, mostly cups and plates, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to go about it. I would love if for someone who has some experience and a little knowledge about the products available to respond. I figure I can find out how to shape them as I go along but what type of a clay or material would I use for the cup itself and then to paint it. Can you cook them in a kitchen oven or does that not get hot enough? I would like them to last a good while, I could hand wash them if I had to but it would be even better if I could put them in a dishwasher. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!!!
Aquarium furniture - what shouldn't I use? My resident catfishes are getting territorial over their favourite hidey holes so I need to provide some more. Fishy shops charge the earth for ones large enough for my fish not to get stuck in so I need to get creative. I have a selection of pots and vases knocking around in my cupboards which would make quite satisfactory caves but I'm not sure what materials are safe to use (ie metal, earthenware, fired pottery?) Also how would I go about sterilising them?

Few question about clay...? Hello! I've been interested in art for a while now, however I've never really been interested in pottery until just recently. I would love to get started. Here are a few questions: What is the best kind of clay to get? If I wanted to make little things, how would I fire them? Is there an inexpensive kiln for at home use? (Nothing crazy, just a small reasonable one) What tools are best to start with? What paints should I buy, and what paints work best? Lastly, are there any wonderful sites I should know about to help me get started? :) If there are any additional details/facts I should know, please feel free to add them in. Sorry if this sounds absurd;you can tell I'm new. lol Thank you very much. Your help is really appreciated. :D

Alternative materals for sand block sculpting? I'm looking for an alternative ingredient to solidify a sand mixture for producing sand blocks. These blocks would be used in subtractive sculpting / carving. The stabilizing ingredient I am familiar with is a two part resin that hardens to solidify the sand mixture. This mixture uses only 2 ingredients, sand and the resin. You may have seen this mixture used to make sand molds for casting metals in industrial applications as well as fine art applications. I like to use these sand blocks (2ft. cubes and smaller) for carving as they are easy to produce and shape. I'm looking to find an environmentally friendly ingredient to replace the resin in the mix. Possibly something that could be rehydrated after use and formed back into another block, ie: how pottery clay(not fired) can be recycled by rehydrating it. I'd like to achieve large blocks (2x2x2 ft.) without fracturing in the curing process. I only need to carve the blocks, not use them for casting metal. Thanks for any advice
Essay revision please.? ( I really suck at writing essays, mostly because my paragraph structures suck and im missing a conclusion.) Ceramics “It’s like Christmas every time you open the Kiln.” – Ianna Frisby It was my 6th grade class field trip to Sly Park when I first used the pottery wheel. I’ve seen it on T.V. so I was excited that I was able to have that experience. In Sly Park we used a kick wheel to make our vessels. I could not decide how I should make my vessel since we each got a small block of clay it limited my choices on what I could make. Then I tried hand building and learned that you can do so much with so little clay. After that field trip I really wanted to take a ceramics class. When I started to attend college I noticed that Sierra College had a ceramics class, so I decided to take it. I was a little nervous at first because I was not familiar with art classes at college and I was not sure what I would benefit from it. At first it started out kind of slow and easy because we were just going over the basics and learning hand building techniques. The next week we were being introduced to the wheel. I thought I knew how to make a vase since I’ve done it once before but as it turns out, I didn’t even know that basics. It was hard to make a simple vessel or vase. I could not “center” the clay and when I finally did I could not keep it centered. There was a 4 point body technique that you are supposed to do on the wheel so that you can center your clay. And when I tried to raise the walls the entire thing would collapse and I had to start all over. I decided to stick to hand building since I was more successful at it. There are so many different techniques and tools you could use. One of my favorite tools was the slab roller, you just put your chunk of clay and on the table, turn the handle, and you have a nice flat evened out slab. My second favorite was probably the drape molds. You just take your slab of clay and drape it over the mold and design it however you want in less time. After the clay is how I want it, I start building. Then I start designing it. I use press molds, carving tools, and different utensils that I find laying around. When it came to glazing, that’s what really got my attention. It was almost like magic, you never know what you’re gonna get. You take your bisque ware and dip it into a large bucket of red glaze, and after the firing process, your red glaze turned blue-green, purple, or just red. Sometimes the Ingredients in the glaze are wrong and it messes up your work. But sometimes a disaster turns into art.
Kiln Questions? I am new to pottery and have become addicted! I am looking at buying a kiln and am wondering what kind of kiln to buy. - I am not looking to do anything too big so I don't need a huge kiln, but I would like to do vases, pitchers, etc.. maybe 12" high as the finished product (after the "shrinkage"). I also like to make plates, not huge ones just typical plate size. So I am wondering how big of a kiln I would need to buy to be able to make these sort of things. I don't mind having to fire them one at a time. - All the kilns I have looked at have all kinds of weird plugs. Am I just looking at too big of a kiln? Is there any kind of kiln that would work with just a normal USA outlet? - My budget? I am a college student. I think that is all I have to say... Thank you in advance!
Please help me with my characters!!!? Hi, I have posted this question again to see the new feedback. Usually what I get is that the names need to be more unique, which I understand. I tried to make them a little more rare and magical. Hope you like! :D Special thanks to MyClockworkHeart who answered on all of my questions. Thank you to all who helped as well! I need all the help I can get to make this a good story! These are ALL the characters I have so far. I'll probably make more, though. 1. Aurora Farworth---Aurora is the protagonist of the story. She was born on December 3rd. In the story, Aurora is 12 years old. Towards the end of the series (if I do write more books) she will be 16-19. Her wavy, shiny blonde hair falls below her shoulders. Aurora has chocolate brown eyes, as well as light, faded freckles and skin that is light in color. She is very shy, yet determined to accomplish her goals. She is very graceful. Since Aurora grew up in a cruel aunt's home, she came up with plenty of creative ideas to cheer herself up. In the beginning of the story, she is frightened very easily, but becomes courageous and develops bravery throughout the tale. Aurora was born in the UK and her ending destination is on a fantastical island. (I have yet to come up with a name for this island...perhaps the Isle of Harmonia) 2. Astrid Cartwright---Astrid is the supporting character. She is much older than Aurora, perhaps in her 30's-40's, but her age is never given in the story. Astrid's date of birth is also not shared. When asked how old she is, she responds, "Age is but a number, yet even a grown woman can defy it." Astrid has long, curly black hair that she usually keeps in an updo. Her mysterious appearance is added on to with her misty grey eyes. She has a clear complexion and pearly teeth. Astrid is a witch who creates magical remedies for illness as well as potions for various purposes. She rarely casts spells, but when she does, it is only for very little things, such as fixing items or making meals. Astrid saves Aurora from her death and makes her an apprentice. Astrid loves adventure. She is also very demanding, but does not put a lot of labor on Aurora. Generally, Astrid is a very kind, witty, and intelligent person. 3. Princess Arenna Rhineholdt---Arenna is a spoiled, unjust, and cruel princess of the Isle of Harmonia. Even though she looks quite dignified, she often does not know what she is doing. Arenna captured many creatures of elements (water, earth, fire, sky) and enslaved them to work for her. Since the mermaids, gnomes, salamanders, faeries, pixies, etc. no longer belong to the elements, the island becomes a horrid place, with all the elements out of balance. There are more natural disasters, all the cause of Arenna. Arenna is only interested in power and possessions. Arenna's age is not given in the story. She is a young woman. Arenna has straight, waist-length red hair and stunning green eyes. She is very selfish and greedy. 4. Kaira----Kaira is an elf girl. She is one of the few rebels who does not work for Princess Arenna. She, Astrid, Aurora, and her brother Drayden are determined to restore the balance of the element creatures. Kaira is very bubbly and talkative. She loves going on long journeys, then returning to Astrid to brag about what she has seen. Kaira lives on the northwestern end of the island, near Astrid. The two of them are close friends. Kaira has short, flipped brown hair and hazel eyes. She is very stubborn and is not afraid to defend herself. Kaira hates staying in one spot. She is often impatient with her brother Drayden, who is quite studious and timid. 5. Drayden---Drayden is the brother of Kaira. He is interested in his studies and hobbies, which include pottery and building. Drayden looks much alike his sister Kaira. The only differences are his rimmed glasses and his short-cut hair. Like Aurora, he is very shy and does not come to visit as often as Kaira. So, what do you think? Please give me any criticism you have! Thank you so much! Hm, I hadn't noticed the "A" thing...perhaps Celestia might be a better name for the princess?
How would you feel if you were invited to this wedding, or the fact that they are even having it? I just went to get my mail and low and behold there was a wedding invitation in it. (I could tell from the wedding belles printed on the envelope) So before I opened it I was thinking, who do we know thats been engaged? I couldn't think of a single person. So I open the invite and to my suprises it's an invite to my FSIL's wedding. Now she lives 3 blocks form us and we see her/talk to her every other day. There are a bilizzion reasons why this totally upsets me: 1 our wedding is April 5, 09. We have been planning since last May, and considerig that (to my dismay) she is a bridesmaid, she certainly knows about it an all the detials. When we originally told her our date she said to my HTB "o we were going to get married next april" speaking of her fiance and herself. Granted we knew this was Bull and she just wanted attention; so we ignored it. Well appreantly she got a brilliant idea in the last 3 days to have a wedding. Also did I mention that she will be 7 1/2 months pregnant at our wedding, and also has a 3 year old. And she just go fired from her job as a checker at Acme (a grocery store). So basically the invite reads that they are having a wedding 4/19/09. The ceremony will be in her mothers back yard, and to please bring your own chair. Then for the reception they are asking everyone to bring one food/drink per person, IT'S A FREAKING POTLUCK WEDDING! And also if anyone has an ipod and speaker hook up to load some good songs to listen to. Now I understand that everyone has the right to thier wedding, but come on. From the day we got engaged she's been trying to "outdo" us. As good hearted of a person as she my be, this guy wouldn't be around if it weren't for their kid(s). And honestly she doesn't really understand materialism so she isn't trying to "outdo" us in cost or quality, but she is pretty much trying to highjack the whole excitment of our wedding. And get this, the girl having a potluck wedding, who printed the invites on plain computer paper, like she was doing her 3 YO's bday invites, is registered at POTTERY BARN and WILLIAMS-SONOMA. Now until all my BM's (she is one too) started discussing my shower last week she didn't know what pottery barn or williams-sonoma was; until she found that I am registered there. Not to make this too much about me but for gosh sakes this is TOO MUCH. I don't even know what to do. We're supposed to see them tomorrow. And no her mother didn't encourage this, her mother actually has some class and would have done things properly, and not 2 weeks after our wedding! O and it gets even better, the second page asks anyone with a garden to please bring FLOWERS!!! I mean come on is she that desperate to get the attention off of us (me) and onto her? She isn't unloved or ignored, just stupid. I seriously am appauld. I don't even know if I can go. I'm not friends with her at all, my HTB begged she be in the wedding as he felt bad for her and new she wanted to be in it terribly. And honestly she would be just as content going to the court house, so to her this is an upgrade of what they talked about before. I think I'll go south of the border and get them $.89 burritos from taco bell! Right but I do have claim to the adys before my wedding, like the day of my shower O GOD WHAT IF SHE WANTS TO SHARE :(. And the rehersal dinner, and all the other prep work. I can see her taking over the people (from her family) who were going to be helping me, I'm sorry but I'm more concerned with OUR day turning out as best it can then with HER half-azzed BS attemt at pizzing me off!
How do I list itemized deductions for casualty and theft losses when I file my taxes? This past year I experienced a rather large apartment fire that destroyed not only all my personal property but the entire building as well. I have been trying to make a list of itemized deductions to send in with my taxes, however, I've become stumped at how to list the value for certain items and whether or not I can even claim them. See, I am an artist and craftswoman and some of the things I've lost were handmade items that weren't themselves purchased in a store, but the materials the items were made from were. For instance, my pottery, which cost me the raw clay bodies, glazes, and kiln firings (not inexpensive things) or afghans which I've made from yarn that cost me quite a bit of money upon purchase. Should I forgo listing these items, as their value is difficult to prove, or is there someway I can claim their losses?
How do you make a pottery kiln? clay kilns are so expensive! i was wondering about how to make them yourself...i also don't want to catch my field on fire so how can i do it safely? it would be cool if the kiln could "cook" the clay evenly...does anyone know how to do this or if it's even possible?
Sharpies or fine point pens for pottery firing? HI all , I am looking for a Sharpie or other FINE POINT marker that can be used in Firing on Pottery. One that will withstand the heat. I dsperately need a fine point pen to use to make detail. Blessings, Anna
Firing a Kiln after your pottery has been painted...? I have heard it takes about 24 hours to fire your pottery in a kiln (at the last firing). Places like "paint your own pottery" for instance...do they sit there after hours when the store is closed, and fire the kiln? If so, does someone have to sit there and watch it for 24 hours? If you have this experience, please let me know what you do and how that works. Thank you
Building and firing a wood burning pottery kiln? I just graduated from my school and won't have kiln access anymore. I've been offered space outdoors if I want to build my own kiln. Can anyone give me advice (or plans) for how to build a *small* (room for ~6 medium size vessels would be fine) wood burning kiln? I currently use grey and red clay (Hy-bond F-97 and Hy-bond F-96) which is glaze fired to cone 6. What temperatures can I expect to reach with a wood kiln, where can I find a stoking procedure, and what clay should I try? Looking at the size of what I've made in the past, small would be a 3x3' footprint.
Pottery Firing and Glazing? I throw on a wheel and I would like to know whether or not it is ok to glaze greenware (before putting it into the kiln for the first time). I have some interesting lead paints (I won't eat out of my pottery) and I would like to glaze as soon as possible.
Home Pottery Firing? I was looking for a good way to fire my pottery at home (short of buying or renting a kiln) Is there a good way to do it? I tried a blowtorch, but my piece exploded in my face...
Pottery firing question? I did pottery a bit ago in a class, and was thinking of taking it up again for fun and to make a bit of extra cash. While considering the pros and cons of my own kiln (quite expensive ) a friend said that I could use my fireplace instead. I had also heard about microwave kiln type things, that you stick your creation in and then heat up in the microwave. They're supposed to make it the temp much warmer. Do they work? Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Can you Bisque-fire pottery without a kiln? I am planning on making some pottery that I intend to fire in a a firing pit in my backyard. Everywhere I've seen reccomends bisque-firing first to insure the strength of the piece, however, I do not have access to a kiln and was wondering about any alternate methods to firing pottery either bisque, or just in general. Thanks
Pottery: firing, reapplying fresh clay, refiring ok? I know the title sounds a little weird, but is it possible if say I were to make a clay pot that didn't look very smooth when i took it out of the kiln, could I apply clay slip to it and polish it and refire it so it would look smooth? or would it crack
how did indians fire clay pottery? i just wonder what indians used to fire pottery? Did they use a kiln made from bricks or just set it by a fire? please answer this question i have been asking myself for a long while.
can i use sunlight to 'fire' pottery? hi im planning on making pottery in spain and was wondering if the sunlight would be enough to fire the pottery as i do not have space for a kiln but can place made items in direct sunlight ????
Can I make my own pottery glaze? I used local clay from some streetwork here in lincoln nebraska to make a small pot. I sucsesfully bisque fired it with charcoal in an old clay fondation tile. Would a slurry of ash clay and water work as a glaze? will the charcoal get hot enough to fire the glaze? If not is there any way to make potter glaze I can fire with charcoal using locally found materials?
Can you fire pottery more than once? Once you glaze and put the product in the kiln can you do it second time even if the pottery is finished? Will it explode because it is already finished or can it withstand the heat?
What type of paint can I use on pottery that has been fired once? My mother in law made some pieces long ago but never finished them, so they are unglazed. Her birthday's coming up, and we're thinking of having each grandchild decorate one of the unfinished pieces as presents. Just wondering if you have any idea what sort of paint might work best. It isn't as though these will be eaten off of or used to cook anything, so it's okay that they won't be watertight.
How do you open a shop for pottery and other art in a small town. And to have it give back to the community? My family has been to several places to "do your own pottery/ ceramics" and they fire them for you. (In much larger cities) Our size is maybe 12,000 pop. My goal is to open something similar to this yet allow different classes to be taught also. Ex: painting, scrapbooking, batiking, sewing, sculpture, stainglass...any mediums people (children and teenagers also) would be intrested in. A place for all ages (allow kids to have b-day parties!) Also giving teens a place to hang & show their talents. Of course the art mind has no sense of the business mind. I clearly need advice on how this could be started and where to look for financing . It would be a great opportunity for this small town in TX w/nada. Allowing families and kids to do something unique. I have many ideas and themes found by talking to others. I feel that placing some of the profits with local and international charities would be a good way to give back. (Hab 4 Hum, YoungLife, Compassion I.) Just need a place to start.
Places to fire pottery in Austin? I have a potter's wheel and have made many pieces, but no kiln! Is there any place that would fire my pots for me? How much do they charge? I live in Northwest Austin, so the closer to home the better. Thanks!
Question about firing clay pottery.? I'm making a hotdog (with bun) out of clay, but I don't want the 'dog' to actually be -joined- with the bun. My question is, if I sculpt both the hotdog and the bun separately, and let them air dry separately and if I have the hotdog (already bone dry) inside of the bun (also bone dry) when I put them into the kiln, will they end up melded and inseparable? Thanks!
Pottery Question regarding Kiln and Clay? I done pottery in Jr. High school and would like to start doing it again. My problem is that I don't know what type of clay to buy, but more importantly where to find a kiln that is not $500 or higher. I don't know anything about the firing part of pottery. Any information would help! Thanks!
How to get gloss black pottery? I have a peice of pottery and I want to fire it in a pit and i want it to come out black like the native american pottery. How do I go about doing this. Thank you
Where can i fire my pottery? How would i find a place in my city where they'd fire stuff that i made (out of clay) .. Haha i can't really afford a kiln right now.
How hot can you get homemade pottery? I made a tea pot in my pottery class and I was wondering if you can actually boil water in it. I don't know what kind of glaze is on it but I know it is safe to drink out of. It has been fired two times on for the clay and one for the glaze.
How do I clean an unglazed piece of pottery so I can eat off of it? I just returned from Honduras C.A. and bought this really neat pottery piece. Basically it's a pot that you put coal or fire into and then place a bowl on top of it. The heat is used for melting cheese or beans for dips. since this came from another country it needs to be sanitized, plus I'm curious about how to clean it after use. It is a brown color and has not been glazed. How would you go about cleaning this piece so you can eat off of it?
Pottery studios in north metro or north east Georgia? I am looking for a membership pottery studio in the north metro or north east Georgia area. I know about the one in Decatur/mud fire and Tucker but I am trying to find something closer (gas). I am looking for one with a monthly membership. I know about the one in Decatur (Mud Fire) and the one in Tucker but is there any more? Thanks!
What type of paint or glaze do I need to make Talavera-Mexican tiles? Any pros's out there willing to coach me I actually want to paint a bisque wash basin like you see in the mexican resturants. They have matching toilets as well, I know I will have to purchase that, I could never find a kiln that big!!! I want to make a few tiles as well. My question is exactly what kind, brand & type of glaze or paint with sealer am I looking for? Not that paint or tile that I can't fire. It has to be waterproof & functionable. Is there a site that has illustrations step by step & where I can order such paint. What kind of bisque or pottery am I looking for? I am very artistic and I know I can do this, I just need the basics and the right supplies. If someone knows or has done any of this craft please advise me. There are no classes to take anywhere near my home. Here are a few examples of what I want to do. http://www.tierrayfuego.com/TalaveraTiles/images/0000_main_classic.jpg http://www.tierrayfuego.com/TalaveraTiles/Sinks/images/index_image_self_rimming_oval_sink.jpg I appreciate any advise! I need some instructions. I have found 100's of sites selling them but none that explain the type or brand of paint and tile firing process. WWW. is the best resource for anything, I'm just not finding what I'm looking for. Keep more sites coming please.....Maybe I'll find the right instructions.
How do I glaze this piece of pottery without it sticking to the kiln? I'm planning how I would glaze a piece I have not made yet, simply, a round lid shape with walls. Example: http://www.justbynature.com/images/containers/LidAntGold2.jpg I don't want to leave the rim (pointing down) unglazed - is there any way to go about firing this so that this edge can be glazed?
how do you fire a piece of pottery with red glaze ??? I fired a piece of pottery and I coated it with red glaze so of the parts came out brown and the others red, using an electric kiln what would be the procedures to fire a piece and get all of the project red not brown ???
Will a hairline crack in pottery fuse in a kiln? I have several pieces that have given rise to hairline cracks during drying. These do not go farther than the surface, and I was hoping that once I bisque fire (with a coat of underglaze) and refire with a clear coat the crack will be gone. ...Will they?
Chalk, pottery figureing, ventage Santa, can you tell me anything about this item from the description? I bought this and need info on it: I searched e-bay and found something close.. but nothing like it. I have what is called a Chalk figuring of Santa sleeping in a chair that was a working light. It stands about 9" tall. The lamp shade is gone and wiring pulled out but I will replace that. It is old... 50's? On the back of the chair it has the name, Anderson, hand written from what it appears prior too glazing. I have seen some very close too this on e-bay that are piggy banks but this is the only one I have found that is actually a lamp. It is heavy and made of what they called, Chalk, not a plaster mold kind of thing. I am sure it is from a mold but used the Chalk mix in the pour. This could be a universal mold and painted and fired by a crafter but it is VERY PROFESSIONALY DONE and very neat and old looking. well what else too say, santa in a red suit, snoozing in a chair with his head tipped a bit pouring out the zzzz's. Well, let me know . Thanks
Pottery glaze coming off of stepping stones? I made my own flowers, leaves, hearts etc to embellish my stepping stones. I used a low fire glaze and low fire clay. After winter months were over I noticed the glaze chipping off. Any sugguestions?? TIA Jane
Can you use two flint pieces to create a fire? yeah i have this project from school -_- i need to relate 4 of the greatest inventions from the Paleolithic Age to the end of the Neolithic age to each other i chose: Flint Handaxe Making Fire(sharpening the handaxe, getting sparks making the connection and creating fire) Pottery ??? i need to be sure you can use two pieces of flint to create a fire ;x and any advice what my two after fire should be?
Must clay pottery be fired in a kiln for it to be "fit" for use in human consumption? I've noticed that all the clay I look at in the craft shops, etc, is labeled as being unsuitable for use in human consumption, even though many are also labeled "non toxic" (???). Is there a special type of clay that is "fit" for use with food, or is it the kiln-firing process that makes it safe, or what? I mean, I don't think that indiginous peoples had access to kilns or glazes when they were using their pots (?)... so, I'm a little confused here...
Where to find pottery studio? I live in the milwaukee area, and love ceramics and I would buy a potters wheel but have no place to fire my work. It's not hard to build a raku kiln but I still need to bisque fire, does anyone know where you can fire pieces or rent studio time?
Ideas for a Pottery Report? Im suppose to give a brief presentation in pottery class on a specific artist, culture, style, or technique.. for example, Jomon Pottery, or Raku Firing, or ceramic teapots.. something like that. It just needs to be a slide show a few minutes long but i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, like an artist with really cool works, or a really interesting technique.. i dont know!! just looking for ideas... thanks! Thanks guys.. I looked up Lucchesi, very cool! i think i'll go with Yi-Xing Pottery though, specifically the Artist Robert NotKin.. Thanks for the ideas though!!
what makes glaze go grey and not shiny in a pottery kiln? i sometimes find that the glaze i put on plates and mugs in my pottery kiln comes out grey with no shine i have tried firing the kiln hotter but this does not help i use slip that is old and cast in molds that are also old animals and small pieces are ok
Pottery with Children? Today on (tv show) Reading Rainbow, Native Americans made pottery. We have clay in our yard (you can form a ball with the soil, it is so filled with clay). Do you think I'd have to add anything to it to do some pottery with it? How would I fire it without a kiln? I went to the site you (second answerer linked) and it was all ads.
