  1. Depending on the size: perfume, wine, water, jewellery, cosmetics, powder ..........if you go to the Quick Index at http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/sirrobhitch.suffolk/portland%20state%20university%20greek%20civilization%20home%20page%20v2/docs/8/glatt.htm#oinochoe you will find names of different types, click on them and you will get pic and description of what they were used for.
  2. Greek pottery may be divided in four broad categories: storage and transport vessels, mixing vessels, jugs and cups and vases for oils, perfumes and cosmetics. Within each category the forms are roughly the same in scale and whether open or closed, where there is uncertainty we can make good proximate guesses of what use a piece would have served. Some have a purely ritual function, for example white ground lekythoi contained the oil used as funerary offerings and appear to have been made solely with that object in mind. Many example have a concealed second cup inside them to give the impression of being full of oil, as such they would have served no other useful gain.
