Pottery Question regarding Kiln and Clay?
I done pottery in Jr. High school and would like to start doing it again. My problem is that I don't know what type of clay to buy, but more importantly where to find a kiln that is not $500 or higher. I don't know anything about the firing part of pottery. Any information would help! Thanks!

- I do not have a place I can have a kiln but I have learned there are some ways around this Look for classes you can take in drivable distance Look for clubs - some also offer classes Look for ceramic studios and also talk to local ceramic artists Some places are very particular about the clay and glazes that they will fire - You may need to buy materials through them. Remember these places are a business that you want to use
- Rummage sales and newspapers will sometimes have kilns for sale. They would be electric kilns that have a pretty easy shut off system of cones that will automatically turn the kiln off. You need to have 220 volt outlet. Otherwise other places will fire for you and charge by volume.
- I got a used kiln for $200.00 several years ago and more than likely could ask for the same price if I ever wanted to sell it. There is clayart.org which is a pottery/ceramics chat room via email and there are occasionally people listing kilns for sale and people asking to purchase kilns. Ceramic studios are a good place to inquire as might an art department at a university that teaches ceramics. The internet may have other options such as ebay and other ceramic chat rooms. Have a look here for some things to consider: http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=buying+a+ceramic+kiln+for+the+first+time.&btnG=Google+Search
- you can buy kilns with a firring space of 8 inches by 9 inches called a test kiln, anything bigger will cost you $800.00 to several thousands, you should start with low fire earthen ware clay Paragon makes a 12 x18 kiln for around $800.00 it plugs into the wall and wheels around with a luggage cart handle
