- Hi: I think it would. 1/2 horse power motor is used to turn ( cut ) steel on a metal lathe or pull a 1.5 ton truck, it should do it easily. However you should look at the wheel size, mass and the speed at which it spins the clay this will determine How much clay it can handle. Check to see if you can vary it speed also . So check this and ask questions about it to the Pottery dealer; He or she can tell you more about it. Here something that might interest you: http://www.bigceramicstore.com/Informati... http://home.twcny.rr.com/baddog/plans.ht... http://www.studiopottery.com/cgi-bin/kic... http://www.llpots.com/treadle/plans.php or you can do the following : for a small pottery wheel use a lazy susan ( get them at any hardware store screw on a wooden disk, screw the whole thing to a good sturdy table wet the table (get a belt and electric motor if you want to) ,throw the clay on, and start spinning it and molding the clay. Do whatever you do to clay after that ,and fire it in a klin . instant vase or whatever. or : Go to e-bay and type Pottery wheel plans and you can find who sells them. pay the price.get the plans , Buy the the material, start building, and your in the pottery business simple as that. Hope this helps
